Morrisons Shocks Shoppers with Boxing Day Closure
Morrisons has dropped a festive bombshell — this year, all its supermarkets will shut their doors on Boxing Day. That’s right, over 110,000 staff get an extra day off to relax and recharge after a gruelling year.
Back to the Old-School Tradition?
This move hints at a possible return to simpler times when shops shut for extended holiday breaks around Christmas and New Year. In 2020, a few rivals like Asda and Tesco closed on Boxing Day, but Morrisons’ key competitors like Sainsbury’s stayed open.
Morrisons Thanks Hardworking Staff
“We know everyone at Morrisons has worked incredibly hard over the last 18 months and continues to do so, as together we’ve responded to the unprecedented challenges of a global pandemic, serving our customers and local communities, and caring/" title="Caring" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">caring so much for each other,” a Morrisons spokesperson said.
“We’ve been listening hard to colleagues about how best to say thank you, and are pleased to confirm that this year we’ll take the exceptional step of closing all our supermarkets on Boxing Day, so as many of our key workers as possible can enjoy a two day weekend break with family, friends and other loved ones.”
The big question now: will other supermarkets follow Morrisons’ lead and give workers a proper festive break?
