Dame Vera Lynn Honoured with New £2 Coin
British wartime icon Dame Vera Lynn has been immortalised on a special £2 coin. The singer famously lifted spirits during World War Two with classics like We’ll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover.
Iconic Portrait and Beloved Words
The reverse side of the coin features a detailed portrait of Dame Vera alongside the timeless phrase, “we’ll meet again.” It also includes the years of her life, marking her passing in 2020 at the remarkable age of 103.
Dame Vera’s daughter, Virginia Lewis-Jones, said, “It’s fantastic to see my mother celebrated in this way and to ensure her legacy lives on.”
She added, “We’re just so excited and pleased – even more so knowing that Royal Mint coins require approval of Her Majesty the Queen. I’m especially pleased that this coin is available to international collectors.”
Legacy of Music, Charity, and Courage
Virginia reflected on the lasting impact of her mother: “Over the years I’ve always been touched by the sacks of letters we receive from people all over the world who have been moved in some way by my mother’s music, charity work or morale-boosting performances during the war.”
Beyond her singing career, Dame Vera campaigned tirelessly for causes close to her heart, including the Burma Star Association — supporting WWII veterans from the Burma Campaign.
Honoured with a damehood in 1975 and named a Companion of Honour in 2016, Dame Vera’s legacy remains a beacon of hope and patriotism.
Royal Mint Pays Tribute to a British Treasure
Clare Maclennan, director of commemorative coins at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taf, said the new coin is “the latest tribute to one of Britain’s greatest national treasures.”
