Migrant Chaos in the Channel: Up to 10 Rescue Ops Underway
It’s a busy day in the Channel as rescue teams tackle up to 10 separate migrant boat incidents. This follows the morning interception of at least 10 small boats trying to cross into the UK.
Rescue Rush Near Dover, Folkestone, and Ramsgate
The Dover lifeboat zoomed out around 11am after reports of a migrant boat in trouble near Folkestone. Several people from the small vessel were rescued. Not long after, the same lifeboat was scrambled again to a new incident near Ramsgate.
Meanwhile, the Dungeness lifeboat responded to a distress call about four miles offshore at the same time. Both Walmer and Ramsgate lifeboats are also handling separate emergencies right now.
Another Big Day for Channel Crossings
A local Dover source revealed today is “shaping up to be another significant day of migrant activity in the Channel.” This comes after 16 small boats were intercepted by Border Force and lifeboats just yesterday, with over 500 migrants brought to British shores.
French authorities have also stopped eight boats carrying 307 people from making the crossing on their side.
Deaths Highlight Dangers of Crossing
Tragically, on Monday, French officials confirmed a local fishing boat recovered the body of a suspected migrant floating near the French coast. This marks the fifth known death on the French side of the Channel in the last week.
Dan O’Mahoney, Border Force commander, warned: “These journeys are dangerous and facilitated by violent criminal gangs profiting from misery. We are working with the French to stop boats leaving their beaches and crack down on the criminals driving these crossings.”
The Channel crisis shows no sign of slowing, with rescue teams stretched and officials scrambling to stem the flow amid mounting tragedies.
