Chaos at Dover: Long Lines Spark Travel Nightmare
Massive queues have formed at the Port of Dover after a “critical incident” on Friday. Fuel price protests threaten to add to the chaos, risking travel havoc for thousands.
Who’s to Blame? Staffing or Tunnel Trouble?
Dover’s port CEO slammed French border controls, blaming “woefully inadequate” staffing for the delays. But French police said it was an “unexpected technical incident” under the Channel Tunnel causing the gridlock.
P&O Ferries warned travellers to allow at least six hours for security checks. Some lorry drivers labelled the disruption “the worst” they’ve ever faced at Dover.
Fuel Protests Add to Travel Woes
Meanwhile, fuel price protests on the M5 caused a slow convoy of vehicles, though this cleared within hours with only minor delays. But the AA warns drivers heading to Dover and Folkestone to brace for long delays well before the terminals.
“It is incredibly important that drivers are prepared for delays long before they reach the terminal,” said Jack Cousens, AA head of roads policy. “Make sure you have enough fuel, plus plenty of water and snacks.”
“Use the AA app to track congestion and stay in touch with your travel company for the latest advice.”
Other Ports Holding Up – For Now
EuroShuttle at Folkestone is seeing delays of around three hours, but other Channel ports like Portsmouth and Newhaven are running smoothly. The AA Route Planner began reporting severe delays at 3.30 a.m. and continues to monitor the situation.
Drivers heading to Dover or Folkestone should prepare for a slow, frustrating journey and pack for the long haul.
