Film4’s Sci-Fi July: Over 50 Mind-Blowing Movies to Binge
Get ready, sci-fi fans! Film4 is launching Sci-Fi July, a month-long celebration of cutting-edge science-fiction and fantasy films. Over 50 movies will screen on Film4 and be available on All 4 from July right through to August — including several UK TV and network premieres.
Big Hollywood Hits and Cult Classics
The festival kicks off at 9pm on Friday, July 1st, with Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel, penned by James Cameron. The lineup covers everything from gritty cult favourites like Attack the Block, Scanners, and Re-Animator to quirky gems such as Sea Fever, Time Bandits, and Disney’s classic Flight of the Navigator.
Hollywood stars dominate Sci-Fi July. Will Smith tussles with a clone in Ang Lee’s Gemini Man. Natalie Portman spirals into madness after a space mission in Noah Hawley’s Lucy in the Sky. Kristen Stewart battles an earthquake in the underwater thriller Underwater. Plus, Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger return for a sizzling new blockbuster you won’t want to miss.
Superheroes with Swagger
The season’s got plenty of heroes with attitude. Ben Affleck’s brooding Daredevil joins forces with Jennifer Garner and Colin Farrell. Will Smith teams up with Charlize Theron in Hancock. Zack Snyder’s star-studded adaptation of Alan Moore’s cult comic Watchmen hits the screen. And Brightburn delivers a dark twist with Elizabeth Banks playing a desperate mother protecting her alien-son from a terrifying destiny.
Visionary Directors and Stellar Sci-Fi Journeys
The greats of sci-fi cinema get their spotlight too. Steven Spielberg brings two Tom Cruise blockbusters: Minority Report and War of the Worlds. J. J. Abrams serves up Super 8 and Star Trek. David Cronenberg’s cult classic Scanners and Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin starring Scarlett Johansson (voted best British film of the 21st century) are also on the bill.
Exploration is a key theme. Films like Beyond the Infinite, the quirky Japanese thriller Two Minutes, eerie Russian sci-fi Sputnik, and the bizarre comedy Mandibles promise something for every sci-fi fanatic. Family favourites include Joe Cornish’s modern-day Arthurian tale The Kid Who Would Be King, Terry Gilliam’s outrageous Time Bandits, and multiple Star Trek adventures featuring legends William Shatner, Sir Patrick Stewart, and Chris Pine.
