Furloughed Workers Can Now Join UK Farm Workforce, Says Government

The government has given a green light for furloughed staff to take up seasonal farm jobs—if their contracts allow it. This move is a lifeline for growers facing a massive labour crunch during the crucial harvest season.

Farmers Face Huge Labour Shortfall

The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) warns of a shortfall of up to 80,000 seasonal workers needed to pick the nation’s fruit and veg. So far, just 26,000 have signed up to the government’s call for a new ‘land army’ of UK-based helpers.

This latest government clarification could tip the balance, allowing furloughed workers—who are still being paid despite no active duties—to step in and earn extra cash on farms during spring and summer harvests.

CLA Boss Hails ‘Can Do’ Attitude

“Thousands of people are coming forward to help farmers feed the nation. This is wonderful news and shows a tremendous ‘can do’ attitude at these difficult times,” said CLA president Mark Bridgeman.

“Make no mistake, we still need many more to do the same.”

“Up until this week, there was confusion about whether furloughed workers could take temporary jobs while under contract. The government has now listened and made it clear that furloughed staff can take seasonal paid roles to supplement their income.

“For this to work, employers must not block their furloughed staff from seeking other work.”

What This Means for Workers and Farmers

  • Furloughed workers can legally pick fruit and veg if their contracts allow.
  • Offers extra income opportunities during uncertain times.
  • Gives UK farms a vital boost amid a major worker shortage.

With millions currently furloughed, this move could fill thousands of seasonal vacancies and help secure the UK’s food supply.
