Grenfell Tower death toll could hit 50 as police launch criminal probe into fire disaster.
Authorities fear the number of victims trapped in the blaze will soar to around 50. The Metropolitan Police have officially opened a criminal investigation targeting potential failings in the building’s design, construction, and safety measures.
Police Launch Criminal Inquiry
Metropolitan Police commander Stuart Cundy confirmed a senior officer is leading the probe. “We investigate criminal offences,” Cundy said. “I’m not saying crimes have been committed—that’s what the investigation will establish.”
The inquiry will be a painstaking process, involving several agencies working together over what could be many months.
Death Toll Rising, Identification Slow
Out of 17 confirmed deaths, only six bodies have been formally identified. Cundy warned the death toll might still climb and expressed hope it won’t hit triple digits. The search for victims inside the gutted tower block could also drag on for months.
Authorities Brace for Grim Figures
Sources revealed emergency chiefs agreed on a grim estimate of roughly 50 fatalities nearly a day ago. However, officials are cautious about releasing such a chilling figure immediately amid the nation’s shock and grief.
As communities reel from horror to outrage, the public demands answers — and fast.
