76-Year-Old Saved by Quick-Thinking Medics After Cardiac Arrest in London Supermarket
A 76-year-old man owes his life to a team of off-duty doctors and paramedics who sprang into action after he collapsed with a cardiac arrest at a Finchley Road supermarket in north-west London.
“It Came Out of the Blue”
Michael Toppin, a Hampstead resident, was recently reunited with his lifesavers from the London Ambulance Service (LAS) after his near-fatal collapse at the checkout.
“I didn’t have any warning. It came out of the blue. I’ve had regular medical check-ups and don’t have a history of heart problems in my family,” Michael recalled.
Luckily, two off-duty doctors standing in the queue heard cries for help from Michael’s partner and rushed to his aid. They performed chest compressions and used a defibrillator to restart his heart before paramedics arrived minutes later.
Rapid Response Doubling Survival Odds
The London Ambulance Service confirms that early CPR and defibrillator use can more than double a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.
The ambulance crew, including Chloe Hobson, Alex Evans, Emily Hurrell, Sylvia Egels, and Andy Parker, provided crucial care before rushing Michael to hospital.
“This is the first time I’ve met someone after treating them for cardiac arrest. Seeing him alive and thriving nearly moved me to tears,” said paramedic Chloe Hobson.
“It makes it all worthwhile and gave me goosebumps. The reunion was special both for him and the crew—it was incredibly wholesome.”
A New Lease on Life for Michael
Michael, once a creative director for ITV’s factual programmes, counts himself lucky to be alive. He credits his survival to the quick-thinking medics and the in-store defibrillator.
“My chances of recovery would have been very low without that immediate help,” he admitted.
Two years on, Michael is slowly rebuilding his strength. He still enjoys trips to Lanzarote, where the warm climate aids his recovery, and is getting back into tennis and swimming.
“I’m not at full strength yet, but I’m alive and getting there.”
