BA Boeing 777 Escape Slide Sparks Drama at Heathrow
Chaos briefly hit London Heathrow on Friday just after 11 a.m. when a British Airways Boeing 777’s emergency escape slides suddenly deployed during pushback at Terminal 5.
No Injuries as Passengers Evacuate Calmly
The sleek BA 777-200ER, registered G-VIIK and bound for Lagos, Nigeria, was slated for a 10:10 a.m. takeoff. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported, and officials say it was an accident.
“Customers disembarked normally after the plane returned to a standstill. We apologised for the inconvenience, handed out refreshment vouchers, and organised a replacement aircraft for their journey,” a British Airways spokesperson confirmed.
Flight Delayed but Passengers Look Ahead
Those onboard were informed a replacement flight will leave at 1 p.m., allowing their trip to continue—albeit later than planned.
Inflatable Escape Slides: Safety’s Lifesavers
These slides, which can shoot out up to 14 metres (46 feet), are vital for quick passenger evacuation. British Airways engineer Peter Dyer revealed the airline tests these life-savers almost daily.
- Every BA Boeing 777-200 features eight evacuation slides.
- Slides are frequently inflated to ensure they function perfectly in emergencies.
- This regular testing helps keep thousands of flyers safe aboard BA jets.
The incident highlights the crucial role of safety equipment—and shows why regular maintenance and checks are non-negotiable.
