Heroic Army Vet and Teen Firefighter Star at Kent Fire Awards

Bravery on Full Display in Chatham

The Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) threw a dazzling awards night on December 7 in Chatham, celebrating true heroes from across the county. Among the standout moments was army veteran John Pratt, who risked life and limb to save his disabled neighbour from a raging blaze in Sandgate, Folkestone.

80-Year-Old Army Vet Bags Act of Bravery Award

John Pratt, in his 80s, was handed the prestigious Act of Bravery Award for his fearless rescue mission. Amid thick smoke and roaring flames, Pratt pulled his neighbour to safety, defying the danger. KFRS Chief Executive Ann Millington praised his courage: “While we always encourage leaving rescues to professionals, John’s quick and selfless actions undoubtedly saved a life.”

Teenager’s Quick Thinking Saves Family

Not far behind was 15-year-old Nick Bradfield from Ramsgate, who leapt into action when fire erupted in his bedroom. Nick tackled the danger head on by switching off the plug, evacuating his 14-year-old sister Megan and their family dog, and shutting his bedroom door to contain the flames. His calm response prevented serious damage to their home.

KFRS Team Heroes Commended

  • Dartford’s station leader Jason Hills scooped the Collaboration Award for teaming up with agencies to stop grass fires at Dartford Heath.
  • Technical Rescue Firefighters Brad Rebbeck, Jim Chaston, and Martin Stanley earned kudos for their search and rescue work in earthquake-hit Turkey with the UKISAR team.
  • Giles Parker received a commendation for his crucial cyclone relief efforts in Malawi.

Millington summed up the night perfectly: “Congratulations to all our deserving winners and nominees. We’re fortunate to have so many selfless people across Kent and Medway, and within KFRS, who go above and beyond to help others. We are one team, and together, we help people stay safe.”

Celebrating Courage and Community Spirit

The KFRS annual awards ceremony highlights not only individual heroics but the power of teamwork and community dedication. It’s a reminder of the bravery and selflessness that keep the public safe every day.
