Fatal Crash Closes M4 in Wiltshire
The M4 is shut both ways between junctions 17 and 18 after a deadly smash in Wiltshire. Two people tragically died in the early hours of Thursday morning. Highways England officers and emergency crews are at the scene.
Two Separate Crashes Bring Chaos
The closure follows two separate collisions in the same stretch. The first, around 1:30am, saw a car flip over between Bath and Junction 1, closing the eastbound carriageway. Shortly after, three lorries collided on the westbound side between junctions 17 and 18.
Road Closures & Detours: How to Get Around
The M4 will remain closed for several hours as a full collision investigation unfolds. Drivers heading westbound should follow the solid diamond diversion signs:
- Exit M4 at junction 17.
- Take first exit at roundabout onto A350 heading towards Cepen Park North (2.5 miles).
- At roundabout take second exit, continue on A350 through two roundabouts to A420 roundabout.
- Take third exit onto A420, travel about 10 miles through Giddeahall, The Shoe, and Marshfield.
- At A46 junction, head north for 3.5 miles.
- Take first exit at roundabout to re-join M4 at junction 18 westbound.
Eastbound drivers should follow the solid square diversion:
- Exit M4 at junction 18.
- Take A46 south for 3.5 miles to A420 roundabout.
- First exit onto A420 east through Marshfield, The Shoe, Giddeahall (approx. 10 miles).
- At roundabout, take first exit on A350 north for 3.5 miles.
- Take fourth exit at roundabout to re-join M4 eastbound at junction 17.
Expect Heavy Delays – Plan Ahead
Delays are expected approaching the closures with further slowdowns on diversion routes. If you’re travelling in the area, allow plenty of extra time or consider alternate routes.
