Historic West Essex Golf Clubhouse Devoured by Devastating Blaze

A fierce fire has torn through the 125-year-old clubhouse at West Essex Golf Club in Waltham Abbey, Essex. Sixty firefighters battled the blaze that gutted the entire two-storey landmark on Monday afternoon.

Emergency Crews Race to Save Century-Old Gem

The inferno erupted just before 3pm at the golf club founded in 1900 by legendary Scottish golfer James Braid. Six fire engines from Essex and Hertfordshire stations scrambled to the scene to tackle the flames raging through the 25 by 15-metre building.

An Essex Fire spokesman said: “Firefighters arrived to find the whole building on fire. Everyone has been accounted for and no one is injured. Around 60 firefighters are working hard to tackle the blaze with support from neighbouring fire services.”

Fire crews made progress containing the blaze and prevented it from spreading to the rear. Authorities will launch a full investigation once the site is safe.

Community and Golfing World Reeling After Massive Loss

The clubhouse was more than just a sporting venue—it was the beating heart of the local community. It hosted weddings, private parties, and countless social events. The fire’s timing couldn’t be worse, coming just months after the club celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2025.

Located 15 miles northeast of London, the club features an 18-hole championship course, practice facilities, and a pro shop. The historic building was a rare surviving piece of golf history, founded by James Braid—one of golf’s revered ‘Great Triumvirate’ alongside Harry Vardon and J.H. Taylor.

The blaze is a crushing blow to local golfers and event organisers, throwing future bookings into chaos.
