Massive Cannabis Farm Discovered Under M1 Near Watford
Over 240 cannabis plants were found growing in a secret tunnel beneath the M1 motorway near Watford, Northamptonshire. National Highways workers made the shocking discovery during routine maintenance on Friday, November 28.
Hidden Tunnel Grow Operation Exposed
The illegal stash was hidden inside a closed drainage culvert carrying water under the motorway. The gang cleverly boarded up the entrance to keep the crop under wraps. Police uncovered a high-tech setup, including extensive shelving to keep plants above water level and power cables running lighting and equipment.
Local Landowner Steps Up to Help Police
Heavy rain and the remote site—over a mile from the nearest road—made removing the cannabis plants a major challenge. Luckily, a nearby landowner provided vehicles and trailers to assist the Daventry Neighbourhood Policing Team in safely dismantling the operation.
“This must be one of the most unusual locations we have discovered a cannabis grow,” said Inspector Jonathan Davis-Lyons. “It just shows the lengths criminals will go to produce this high-value commodity.”
Sergeant Lewis Judd added, “Thanks to the generosity of a local landowner, we were able to shut down a difficult and dangerous cannabis factory.”
