Humanitarian Disaster Unfolds in Eastern Congo as Rebels Block Aid

Rebel Onslaught Sparks Mass Displacement

A brutal crisis is gripping the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as rebel fighters advance, slamming humanitarian aid access shut. Over 350,000 people are now displaced in North and South Kivu, left homeless after relentless artillery attacks and looting obliterated their shelters.

According to UNHCR spokesperson Eujin Byun, “The crisis is worsening as people flee to areas where humanitarian aid cannot reach due to insecurity.”

The destruction is most intense around Goma and Minova, with a staggering 70,000 emergency shelters reduced to rubble.

Health Crisis Spirals Out of Control

The conflict isn’t just about guns and bombs — a ticking health emergency is exploding. Medical centres are either wrecked or overwhelmed by the floods of displaced victims. Deadly diseases like cholera, malaria, and measles are spreading fast. On top of that, the DRC is battling the world’s worst outbreak of mpox (formerly monkeypox), with Kivu as the hotspot.

The World Health Organization reports that out of 143 confirmed mpox cases, 128 patients have fled isolation units in Goma, raising deadly fears of further outbreaks as treatment efforts crumble.

Aid Blocked by Fighting and Road Closures

Humanitarian organisations face an uphill battle. Key supply routes are sealed off:

  • Goma-Bukavu road shut down
  • Restricted access at Goma airport
  • Fierce fighting near vital aid corridors

These blockades leave hundreds of thousands stranded without basic essentials.

Returnees Face Harrowing Dangers

Despite the chaos, about 100,000 displaced people have tried to return home. Their journey is deadly perilous:

  • Homes and infrastructure lay in ruins
  • Little to no food, clean water, or healthcare available
  • Unexploded bombs litter the land
  • Armed groups continue to threaten civilian safety

Global Urgency Grows

International eyes are fixed on the worsening crisis. UN aid official Bruno Lemarquis warns that South Kivu’s key airport—a lifeline for aid—is under threat. Relief groups are calling for immediate action to reopen access, deliver medical aid, and protect civilians caught in the crossfire.
