Ian Wright Opens New Football Pitch in Memory of David Rocastle

From Concrete Playground to Premier League Glory

Ian Wright was joined by David Rocastle’s family to launch a brand-new 3G small-sided football pitch overlooking the estate where both legends grew up. The duo sharpened their skills on the gritty concrete grounds near Turnham Academy before striking gold playing side-by-side for Arsenal FC.

State-of-the-Art Facilities and Stunning Mural Honour Arsenal Icons

This floodlit, all-weather pitch isn’t just top quality—it’s also home to a breathtaking mural by local artist Lionel Stanhope, depicting the two football heroes. The new turf will give kids and community members a safe, inclusive place to play all year round.

Community Hub for Football Fans of All Ages

  • Turnham Academy students get exclusive access during school hours.
  • Millwall Community Trust runs Premier League Kicks, walking football for adults, Weetabix Wildcats, and sessions for Millwall Lionesses and the LGBTQ+ inclusive Millwall Romans outside school time.
  • Local club Hillyfielders FC trains regularly on the pitch.

Wright Pays Tribute to Rocastle and Inspires Next Generation

“Seeing this pitch open and looking so good makes me really proud. It’s going to make such a difference to so many kids in the area I grew up in. For me, it’s more than a pitch—it’s a tribute to my dear friend, David Rocastle,” said Ian Wright. “We used to spend hours kicking a ball about, and now these kids have a proper pitch to play on. It’s so exciting for them! Huge thanks to the Football Foundation, its partners, and EA SPORTS for making this happen. Everyone deserves the chance to reach their potential, and this pitch will give them that space.”

Backing from Football Bigwigs and Government

Robert Sullivan, CEO of the Football Foundation, added: “Whether you end up playing for Arsenal or just enjoy a kickabout with mates, access to quality facilities is the vital first step. Thanks to investments from the Premier League, The FA, and the Government, grassroots football is flourishing nationwide.”

Last year, EA SPORTS teamed up with the Premier League, The FA, and Government through the Football Foundation to fund this £200,000 project.

David Jackson, Vice President of EA SPORTS Brand: “We’re thrilled to support community football through EA SPORTS FC FUTURES. The power of play is transformative, and we want to grow the game for everyone.”

Minister for Sport Stuart Andrew: “This fantastic project funded by the Government, Premier League, and FA will encourage young people to get active with grassroots sport. Not only will Turnham Academy benefit, but so will local clubs like Millwall Lionesses and the LGBTQ+ inclusive Millwall Romans.”

School Leaders and Artist Celebrate a New Legacy

Miz Mann, Executive Headteacher at Turnham Academy: “This pitch is a game-changer for our pupils and community. Ian and David’s legacy means so much to us. Their success and Ian’s dedication inspire everyone who plays here. Who knows—maybe the next Rocky and Wrighty are already on this pitch!”

Lionel Stanhope, Mural Artist: “It’s an honour to pay tribute to two true football legends. I’m proud this pitch will inspire the local community for years to come.”
