Justin Welby’s Christmas Message: Hope Amid Crisis

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby is set to deliver a powerful Christmas Day message, highlighting the “desperate struggles of hospital wards” and the dangers faced by those crossing the Channel in small boats.

Honouring the Queen’s Legacy

In his first Christmas message since Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, Welby will pay tribute to the late monarch. He will say she lived “a life of service” inspired by Christ, always putting others before herself. The Archbishop praised her devotion, saying she “in obedience to the Christ-child lived a life of service and put her interests ahead of those she served.”

Addressing Cost-of-Living Crisis and Global Conflict

Welby recently visited a church-run foodbank and will express deep concern over the UK’s soaring cost of living, describing it as causing “immense anxiety and hardship” for many.

He will also appeal for an end to violence in war-torn nations like South Sudan and Ukraine, urging leaders to “bring hope to millions” caught in conflict and famine. The Archbishop will remind everyone that even if the world turns a blind eye, “God is present in the world through Jesus.”

A Message of Forgiveness and Unconquerable Hope

“In Jesus Christ, God reaches out to each of us here; to those who, like his family, have no resources; into the dark cells of prisons; into the desperate struggles of hospital wards; to those on small boats, to the despairing, and even to the condemned and wicked,” Welby will say.

“He says, ‘Take me into your heart and life, let me set you free from the darkness that surrounds and fills you, for I, too, have been there. For in me, whoever and wherever you are, whatever you have done, there is forgiveness, hope, life, and joy.’”

The Archbishop’s Christmas sermon will be delivered at Canterbury Cathedral during the 11 a.m. Christmas Day Eucharist. Expect a heartfelt call for peace, compassion, and unwavering hope this festive season.
