82 Jobs at Risk as Isle of Wight Council Unveils Redundancy Plans
The Isle of Wight Council has put 82 jobs on the chopping block following the approval of its budget on 24 February. A total of 146 employees have now been officially marked as ‘at risk’ in a formal HR1 notice sent to the government and unions.
30-Day Consultation Begins
The council has launched a formal 30-day consultation period with staff and recognised unions. This window allows everyone to scrutinise the proposals and suggest alternatives to slash costs without compulsory redundancies. Any ideas that could save money and keep staff in work are actively welcomed.
Support and Alternatives Offered
- Staff may be offered alternative roles within the council where possible.
- Voluntary redundancy applications will be invited to ease the blow.
- Services under threat will continue as normal during the consultation period.
- Service users will also be consulted ahead of any changes affecting them.
Council Leader Speaks Out
“This is a decision which has been reached with much regret, and which has been a consequence of the extreme financial position which the council faces over the coming 12 months and into the future,” said Councillor Jonathan Bacon, Leader of the Isle of Wight Council.
He added: “We are offering a lot of support to colleagues who may be affected, but regrettably, some jobs will be lost. We will work hard to minimise the extent and effect of this.”
The timing of any service changes will vary, with full consultation promised to those using the services affected.
