Blazing Heat Sparks Massive Grass Fire in Slade Green!
Two Hectares Go Up in Smoke
Firefighters raced to Howbury Lane this afternoon after a blaze tore through two hectares of dry grassland in Slade Green’s popular recreation area. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
London Fire Brigade Issues Urgent Warning
A spokesperson from the London Fire Brigade said: “The recent hot weather has left the ground bone dry, turning grasslands and parks into tinderboxes. Even the tiniest spark can ignite a fast-moving fire.”
“If you spot a grass fire, do not try to tackle it yourself. These fires spread quickly and can change direction without warning. Call the fire brigade immediately and give your location.”
Fire Crews Swiftly Contain the Flames
- 999 Control Officers handled 18 separate calls about the fire.
- Firefighters were called at 2:44pm and had the fire out by 3:31pm.
- Four fire engines and roughly 25 firefighters from Bexley, Plumstead, and Kent Fire and Rescue responded.
Top Tips to Prevent Grass Fires
- Never hold barbecues in parks, public spaces, or on balconies.
- Clear away bottles, glasses, or broken glass – they can magnify sunlight and start fires.
- Dispose of cigarettes safely; never drop them on dry ground or from car windows.
- Always attend your barbecue and extinguish it fully before leaving.
- Discarded disposable barbecues still hold heat and can ignite fires; extinguish and cool them properly before disposal.
