Tyne and Wear Fire Chief Chris Lowther Calls Time After 26 Years
Chris Lowther, the long-serving leader of Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS), has retired after more than a quarter-century protecting his community. The Gateshead-born firefighter stepped down in March, ending his tenure as Chief Fire Officer, a role he held since 2017.
From Gateshead Firefighter to Chief
Chris’s journey began in 1997 at the Gateshead Community Fire Station. Starting as a frontline firefighter in his hometown, he climbed the ranks through sheer dedication and leadership to reach the top job at TWFRS.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Peter Heath was named Chris’s successor in May. The pair worked closely to ensure a smooth handover. Peter is already shaking up the service, pledging to lead with fairness, respect, and inclusivity. He’s also appointed Stewart Nicholson from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service as the new Deputy Chief Fire Officer starting next month.
Tributes Pour In for Chris Lowther
“It has been a great honour and privilege to serve the communities of the North East alongside such dedicated and professional people,” Chris said in a heartfelt farewell.
Phil Tye, Chair of Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority, praised Chris’s unwavering commitment and leadership through tough times. “We thank Chris for his invaluable service to the community,” he added.
Chris Lowther’s retirement closes a significant chapter in Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service history, as the organisation looks forward to a fresh era under Peter Heath’s command.
