Lightning Tragedy Strikes Cambodia: 50 Dead in 2024 So Far
Cambodia is reeling after lightning bolts have claimed 50 lives in just the first eight months of 2024. A disaster control spokesperson revealed the grim toll on Saturday, highlighting the deadly impact of nature’s fury on the nation.
Rural Farmers Most at Risk During Storm Season
The Southeast Asian country is no stranger to severe thunderstorms during its rainy season, which runs from May to October. Most victims hail from rural areas where farmers work outdoors, making them sitting ducks for lightning strikes. Alongside the tragic deaths, many more have been injured, with widespread damage reported to homes, crops, and livestock.
The government has stepped up warnings, urging citizens—especially in the countryside—to stay indoors when storms hit. They advise avoiding open fields and high ground, where the risk of being struck spikes.
Authorities Brace for More Lightning Deaths This Season
With several stormy months still ahead, officials fear the death toll could climb even higher. Disaster management teams are pushing public awareness campaigns, encouraging the installation of lightning rods and promoting safety measures in vulnerable communities.
“We call on everyone to be vigilant and take lightning threats seriously to reduce further casualties,” a disaster official said.
Lightning may be a natural hazard, but with sharper community awareness and better preparedness, Cambodia hopes to curb the devastating losses in the months to come.
