Liz Truss Faces £12k Bill Over Chevening Stay During Tory Leadership Bid
The £12,000 Chevening Controversy
Liz Truss is hit with a hefty £12,000 bill for her stay at Chevening last year, while she was vying to become Conservative Party leader. The tab covers expenses during that crucial period.
Truss Challenges Most of the Charges
Though Truss admits she’ll pay for personal costs, she’s disputing the bulk of the invoice. She claims much of the bill covers government business use of Chevening, which she says shouldn’t fall on her.
“It would have been inappropriate for me to cover officials who were involved in transition planning,” Truss argues, pointing out that paying would breach the Civil Service Code.
What’s Next for Liz Truss?
Still serving as an MP, Truss has been busy promoting her economic ideas since stepping down. She’s firm she won’t run for prime minister again but is gearing up to defend her South West Norfolk seat at the next general election.
