Leicester’s Lockdown Battle: Hancock Gives Grim Update

Health Secretary Matt Hancock faced Parliament today to spill the latest on Leicester’s local lockdown and a hiccup with Randox swab test kits.

Leicester Still in Lockdown Grip, But Signs of Hope

Leicester’s fight against coronavirus continues under tight lockdown after a surge in cases. The city’s 7-day infection rate started at a whopping 135 cases per 100,000 back in June – three times higher than the next worst city.

At one point, Leicester made up 10% of all UK positive cases. Tough restrictions were needed and agreed on by local leaders, including closing schools and shutting non-essential shops while other parts of England relaxed.

Since then, testing has doubled and lockdown has been enforced with serious local cooperation.

“Thanks to the incredible efforts of people in Leicester, who stuck with the lockdown while others enjoyed freedoms, we can start easing some restrictions but not all,” Hancock said.

From 24 July, schools and early years childcare will reopen. Non-essential retail may reopen selectively, under local powers that can close shops if needed. Social gatherings remain capped at six. Pubs and hospitality will stay closed for now.

Lockdown Zone Shrinks but Virus Still Looms Large

The lockdown area now narrows to Leicester city and Oadby and Wigston, following advice from Leicestershire County Council leader Nicholas Rushton. Hancock accepted this recommendation to tighten the focus where it’s most needed.

Despite some calls to lift the lockdown, Hancock warned it’s crucial for public health to keep restrictions in place. A full review is set for mid-August.

“Your perseverance has brought real results. But please don’t lose your resolve,” Hancock urged Leicester residents.

Randox Test Kits Pulled Amid Quality Concerns

On the testing front, Hancock revealed a snag with some Randox swab test kits. Certain swabs failed to meet the high standards expected, prompting an immediate pause across all testing sites.

“There’s no evidence of harm or impact on test results,” Hancock assured, adding other test kits remain unaffected and testing capacity is not compromised.

This swift action underscores the government’s focus on quality control amid the ongoing pandemic crackdown.

Targets Set for Beating Covid

Hancock wrapped up with a rallying cry on local lockdowns being a vital part of beating Covid-19 for good. The message is clear: follow the rules, get tested if symptomatic, and help crush the virus to get life back to normal.
