Massive Blaze Erupts in Aldgate Tower Block

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has given an urgent update after a major fire broke out on Sunday evening at a residential building on Leman Street in Aldgate.

15 Fire Engines & 100 Firefighters Battle the Blaze

At 5:43pm on April 20, emergency services received 15 calls reporting the fire. LFB quickly sent fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters to tackle the flames.

The fire engulfed two flats on the sixth and seventh floors of the multi-storey block. Fire crews successfully led eleven residents to safety. Remarkably, no injuries have been reported so far.

Swift Action Praise from Borough Commander

Borough Commander Lucy Macleod, present at the scene, lauded the team’s speedy, coordinated efforts. “Crews acted swiftly to bring the fire under control but will remain on site this evening to damp down remaining hotspots,” she stated.

“Road closures are in place causing significant congestion. We urge the public to avoid the area while we work to make the scene safe,” Macleod added.

“One of our 64-metre turntable ladders doubled as an observation tower, giving commanders a vital vantage point during the fight.”

Fire Under Control in Under Two Hours

Firefighters from Whitechapel, Shadwell, Shoreditch, Dowgate, Bethnal Green, and nearby stations tackled the fire. The blaze was brought under control by 7:33pm, less than two hours after the first call.

LFB confirmed the cause of the blaze is under investigation, with specialist teams probing how it started.

Support & Disruption Follow the Fire

  • LFB is working with local authorities to support affected residents. Many evacuees received temporary shelter while safety checks continue.
  • Road closures remain in force around Aldgate, causing major traffic delays. Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes and avoid the area.

LFB Appeals for Public Assistance

The brigade is asking anyone with information or footage of the fire to come forward. “Further updates will follow as the investigation progresses,” LFB said.
