Chaos at Clapham Common Tube as Smoke Fills Train

A major scare hit Clapham Common Station on Friday evening after smoke started pouring from beneath a Tube train, forcing a dramatic evacuation. Passengers trapped inside had to smash windows and doors to escape the choking smoke.

Passengers Break Windows to Flee Smoke-Filled Carriage

Just before 6pm on 5th May 2023, horror unfolded underground as smoke filled one of the train carriages, leaving commuters desperate to get out. Doors jammed, leaving many fighting to escape. Shocking footage shows panicked passengers smashing glass panels and clambering out to safety.

“The carriages were filling with smoke the entire time, and the doors did not or would not open. When we tried to open them, they only opened about 10cm,” said one terrified passenger.

“Thanks to workmen on the platform carrying hammers and tools, the windows were smashed so everyone could get out. There was no response from station staff despite people screaming for help.”

Workers heading home from nearby construction played a crucial role, smashing train windows to free trapped commuters. Some people squeezed through narrow door gaps before the workers arrived.

“If it weren’t for those workmen, I dread to think what could have happened,” said a passenger. Panic and chaos reigned as passengers fled through broken glass amid cries for help.

Emergency Evacuation in Full Swing

An evacuation alert was issued immediately, with signs urging customers to leave the station at once due to the emergency. Fire crews raced to the scene, but it was the quick thinking and bravery of bystanders that prevented a potential tragedy.
