London Faces Fresh Snowfall and Freezing Temps This Week
London is set to shiver through another icy blast as light snow and sleet gear up to hit the capital on Wednesday, January 17. The Met Office warns that this latest chill will make an already freezing city even colder.
Freezing Monday Could Be the Coldest Yet
Monday, January 15, is shaping up to be the chilliest day of the week. Temperatures in parts of London could plummet to -2°C, with a biting wind making it feel closer to -5°C. Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill says the whole UK will endure “very cold” weather, with “significant disruptive snow” expected across central and southern England.
“The cold arctic air will cover most of the UK through Sunday night into Monday, so a cold week is on the cards,” Burkill explained. “Further snow showers are likely, especially in exposed northern and eastern areas.”
Low Pressure Could Bring Major Snow Disruption
A low-pressure system sweeping in from the southwest threatens to dump “significant disruptive snow” on central-southern England. However, forecasters say exact locations and timings remain uncertain, keeping Londoners on edge.
The icy snap follows recent UK snowfall that triggered an amber health alert from the UK Health Security Agency. This alert, covering the Midlands, north-west, and south-west England, remains active until Friday noon as cold weather continues to put strain on health services.
Authorities Act as Temperatures Plummet
Mayor Sadiq Khan has already activated emergency plans to shelter rough sleepers amid plunging temperatures. An ice warning in London remains in place until 3am Tuesday after the city’s first snow this year dusted areas including Orpington, Croydon, and Beckenham on Monday morning.
High pressure systems are ushering in colder-than-average weather. The Met Office warns that Scotland and Northern Ireland face the brunt of next week’s snow, but London and southern England must also brace for possible heavy snowfall.
Deputy Chief Meteorologist David Hayter said: “The initial snow risk is mainly for coastal northern areas, but disruptive snow could spread through the middle to latter part of next week as cold air meets moist winds from the southwest.”
Stay Prepared for Snow and Travel Disruption
Londoners are urged to stay alert to weather updates, prepare for slippery roads, and expect travel delays. As the cold snap tightens its grip, the capital faces a tough week ahead with snow and freezing conditions still to come.
