Expert Advice: Keep Dogs on Leads Near Cliffs
The owners did exactly the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard,” said a rescue spokesperson.
They warned dog owners to keep pets on leads near cliff edges. Dogs can easily pick up scents or sights below and chase after them, risking dangerous falls or being swept out to sea.
If your dog does go over a cliff or into the water, don’t try to rescue it yourself. “Nine times out of ten your dog will manage to get back safely,” added the spokesperson, “but unfortunately some owners put themselves in harm’s way trying to save their pets.”
Coastguards are trained for all sorts of rescues, including dogs. Never attempt cliff climbs without proper training and equipment. And avoid using cliffs as shortcuts – it’s simply too risky.
