M27 Crash Chaos: Major Collision Closes Westbound Lanes Overnight
The westbound M27 near Portsmouth is shut after a serious smash tonight (Sunday 26 June). All three lanes are closed from Junction 11 (Fareham) to Junction 12 (Cosham/M275) and won’t reopen until at least 7am Monday morning.
Flipped Car Traps Two After 10.30pm Collision
The crash happened just after 10.30pm. A car lost control, mounted the embankment, flipped onto its roof, and now blocks the middle lane. Surrounding it are a large goods vehicle, a coach, and two other vehicles.
Emergency crews are at the scene, working hard to free two trapped people inside the overturned car. One is believed to be female.
A sea of blue lights lit up the motorway as fire engines from Cosham, Southsea and rescue teams rushed in. Three ambulances and South Central Ambulance Service’s Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) support the rescue.
Traffic Nightmare: Hundreds of Drivers Stranded
About 250 vehicles have been stuck behind the crash. Police are carefully turning them around, escorting them back to Junction 11 slip road. Many drivers have abandoned cars, gathering on the hard shoulder.
Collision investigators are scouring the scene by torchlight. A crane and recovery truck from Boarhunt garage will be needed to upright and tow the flipped vehicle.
Police warn the motorway will remain closed well into the early hours, potentially until 5.30am or later.
