M4 Shut Both Ways After Human Remains Found on Motorway
The M4 motorway is closed in both directions after human remains were discovered on the carriageway between Junction 20 (Almondsbury Interchange) and Junction 21 (Awkley). The grim find has caused major disruption for drivers in the area.
Police Called After Drivers Spot Frightening Sight
Avon and Somerset Police were alerted around 6:40pm when multiple drivers reported seeing “something on the road”. On arrival, officers confirmed the disturbing discovery of scattered human remains on the busy motorway.
“Enquiries are underway to identify the deceased and notify next of kin. An investigation is ongoing to establish how the person came to be on the motorway,” Avon and Somerset Police said. “The road is expected to remain closed into the early hours of Sunday, February 23.”
Traffic Chaos as M4 and Links Closed
The closure has sparked heavy traffic jams. National Highways has put diversions in place but warned of long delays. The affected stretch runs from the Prince of Wales Bridge to Junction 20 at Almondsbury, with multiple link roads also shut to manage traffic flow.

National Highways urged drivers to avoid the area and allow extra travel time. A spokesperson said: “We’re working closely with Avon and Somerset Police as they investigate. Please follow diversion routes and be patient as emergency services carry out their work.”
