Chaos on the M6! A serious lorry fire has forced a full closure of the northbound M6 between Junction 22 (Winwick) and Junction 23 (Haydock Island) overnight. Emergency crews are still battling the blaze and clearing the scene this morning.
Lorry Blaze Shuts M6 Northbound
The incident erupted late Sunday, sending thick smoke billowing into the night sky. National Highways released chilling images of the lorry fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters battled the inferno for hours to contain the damage.
Emergency services and traffic officers remain on site, working hard to douse the fire and inspect the motorway for damage.
Long Closure Expected – Massive Delays Ahead
National Highways warned the closure will last for a significant period due to the fire’s intensity and possible road repairs.
“To aid traffic management for the morning peak, we’ve closed the link roads from the M62 in both directions to the M6 northbound at Junction 10,” said officials. “Drivers joining the M6 from the M62 should go southbound first, then rejoin northbound at Junction 21.”
Follow This Diversion to Avoid the Chaos
Motorists are urged to follow the Solid Square diversion signs:
- Exit M6 at Junction 22
- Turn right at A579/A572 onto A572 northbound
- Turn left at A572/B5207 onto B5207 northbound
- Right at B5207/A580 onto A580 westbound
- At A580/M6 junction, join gyratory and take 4th exit to rejoin M6 northbound
Drivers should allow extra travel time, plan ahead, and consider alternative routes. The fire has sparked severe delays with more disruption expected throughout the morning rush.
