The M6 southbound has been closed near Stoke-on-Trent after an HGV travelling in the opposite direction crashed through the central reservation and ended up on the southbound carriageway.

The incident happened after junction 15 when the HGV was travelling northbound before crossing the central reservation into the path of oncoming traffic.

Remarkably, no injuries have been reported.

Staffordshire Road Crime Team said:

“HGV travelling North on the M6 after junction 15 went through the Central reservation and into the Southbound carriageway.

“Incredibly there were no injuries as a result of this. Terrifying for the oncoming traffic.

“HGV is about to be moved and investigation will follow.”

The motorway remains closed southbound between junction 16 and junction 15, while lane three is also closed on the northbound carriageway.

Recovery work is progressing, and once the vehicles involved have been removed, the carriageway will need to be inspected before it can safely reopen.

Motorists are being warned to expect significant disruption, with delays currently reported at around 51 minutes southbound on the approach to the diversion.

There are also delays of around 10 minutes northbound.

Drivers are advised to allow additional time for their journeys and follow the signed diversion while the closure remains in place.

An investigation into how the HGV crossed the central reservation will follow.
