Power Blackout Strikes 5,000 Homes Across Southampton
Thousands in Southampton woke up in the dark this morning after a major power cut hit around 5,000 homes and businesses overnight. The blackout began at about 8.10pm on Sunday, affecting properties mainly in the SO14, SO17, and SO18 postcode zones.
What Went Down?
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) reported two separate faults that knocked out electricity in the area. The first fault hit 2,694 customers just after midnight, and while engineers restored power to many, around 600 homes remain without power. The second fault happened minutes later, cutting power to 1,794 homes. Thankfully, over 1,300 customers had power back within two minutes. However, 493 are still in the dark.
Current Situation and Restoration Efforts
In total, 1,093 customers across Southampton are still affected by the ongoing faults. SSEN has pledged to have most homes and businesses back online by 3am.

The blackout primarily affects these postcode areas:
- SO14 – Extensive parts including SO14 0DZ to SO14 6WN
- SO15 – Select areas including SO15 1DA, SO15 2JJ, SO15 2JL, SO15 7NN
- SO16 – Including SO16 2JE, SO16 6AS, SO16 6QR
- SO17 – Widespread impact with codes from SO17 1AB through SO17 2NF
- SO18 – Areas including SO18 1JH
