King Alfred Leisure Centre Pools to Stay Closed Until Easter After Boiler Breakdown

Swimmers Left High and Dry as Boilers Fail

Brighton and Hove Council has announced that the swimming pools at King Alfred Leisure Centre will remain shut until Easter. The 40-year-old boilers and control panel have broken down, leading to major repairs.

The council’s statement confirmed the closure is unavoidable due to the age and condition of the heating system. Without heating or hot water, the pools cannot open.

Freedom Leisure Offers Support to Affected Customers

Freedom Leisure, which manages the centre for the council, is reaching out to members with options. These include suspending memberships and relocating swimming lessons to other venues. Regular updates will be provided throughout the repairs.

Despite the pool closure, the centre’s sports halls, studios, and ballroom remain open to the public.

King Alfred’s Age Is Catching Up

“Due to its age, the King Alfred building is becoming increasingly difficult to operate and maintain,” the council admitted. Specialist contractors found significant issues with the control systems, requiring major work to replace controls and fix the boilers.

Freedom Leisure and the council are working hard to finish the repairs quickly and keep facilities running until a new King Alfred/West Hub is ready.

Officials Express Disappointment Over Closure

Darryl Keech, Brighton and Hove Area Manager for Freedom Leisure, said: “We are very disappointed that we are not able to open the pool due to this technical failure. We are doing everything possible to repair the boiler system and re-open the pool as soon as we can to serve Brighton and Hove residents.”

The closure puts a damper on the plans of many swimmers, including those learning to swim, who rely on the popular pool.
