Amber Alert: Life-Threatening Flood Warning for South and Mid-Wales
The Met Office has slammed down an amber weather warning for heavy rain and flooding across parts of south and mid-Wales. The alert runs from 3pm Sunday to 6am Monday, stretching from Newport to Carmarthen, and north up to Brecon.
Flood Havoc and Travel Chaos Expected
The Met Office warns: “Heavy rain is likely to cause significant flooding and disruption.” The biggest threat? Fast-flowing, deep floodwaters that could put lives at risk.
- Flooding could strike homes and businesses, causing damage.
- Road closures risk cutting off communities and gridlocking travel.
- Train and bus services face delays and cancellations.
- Power outages likely due to water damage and storms.
Locals are urged to prepare and keep a close eye on the situation.
Environment Agency Sounds The Alarm
The Environment Agency backs up the warning, urging extreme caution. Sarah Cook, flood duty manager, warns:
“Just 30cm of flowing water is enough to float your car. Floodwaters can be deeper than they appear and can sweep vehicles away in seconds.”
She advises everyone to sign up for free flood alerts and have emergency kits ready.
Expect river and surface water flooding as drainage systems struggle to cope.
More Warnings Across the UK
- Yellow rain warnings cover parts of England, Scotland, and Wales starting Sunday morning.
- Wind warnings hit Northern Ireland from 3am to 3pm Sunday, and Scotland, Wales, and northern England from 6am to 6pm.
Zoe Hutin, Met Office meteorologist, calls it a “quite severe” weather system with “very strong winds”. She added:
“Sunday will likely be the worst day of the current weather spell, but conditions should improve into early next week.”
Local Authorities On High Alert
Emergency teams in Newport, Carmarthen, and Brecon are on standby, ready with sandbags and flood barriers. Residents are told to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Flood-prone areas near rivers and low-lying zones are at high risk of isolation as floodwaters rise.
Rail companies warn of delays and cancellations, especially on south Wales routes.
