UK Braces for Snow and Ice Chaos as Met Office Extends Yellow Warning
Wintry Blast to Hit Northern UK
The Met Office has extended severe weather warnings for snow and ice across northern parts of the UK. From 4pm today until 10am Tuesday, large swathes of Scotland, northern England, and northern Wales will be under a yellow “be aware” alert as a hefty cold snap moves in.
Snow could pile up to 10cm overnight above 300 metres, possibly doubling by Tuesday. Even lowland areas face significant snowfalls, threatening to disrupt rush hour and cause travel chaos.
Travel and Health Under Threat
- Travel: Expect treacherous icy roads and delays for buses and trains. Drivers must stay alert and check forecasts before heading out.
- Power cuts: The icy conditions raise the risk of blackouts in vulnerable areas.
- Health: Elderly and vulnerable urged to stay indoors due to cold risks. The UK Health Security Agency warns of extra pressure on the NHS during this spell.
Chief Meteorologist Andy Page said: “Yellow warnings are in place as cold weather pushes in from the north, bringing snow showers and likely travel disruption on Tuesday. Gusty winds in the east add to the hazards.”
Who’s Most at Risk?
- Sunday Night: Snow and ice forecast for northern Scotland and Aberdeenshire.
- Monday to Tuesday: Snow extends to the Scottish Borders, Cumbria, Lancashire, northern England, and northern Wales, reaching as far south as Nottingham.
Katherine Crawford, CEO of Age Scotland, warned: “Bad weather makes it tough for elderly folks to get essential shopping or medical help. A simple phone call or helping with shopping could save lives during this chill.”
Economic Worries and Energy Costs Soar
This icy spell hits as energy prices remain sky-high. Europe’s gas market surged 5% recently amid fears of Russian supply cuts and soaring global demand—adding fuel to the fire amid winter’s tightening grip.
Stay Alert, Stay Safe
The Met Office urges everyone to keep up to date with weather reports and travel updates. Coastal flood warnings have also been issued, including Roker in Sunderland and Bawdsey Quay near Felixstowe.
