UK Roads Set to Be Jammed This Weekend With 15 Million Drivers
Brace yourselves! Around 15 million drivers are expected to hit the roads this Saturday, making it one of the busiest travel days of the year.
Port of Dover Chaos: Long Queues and Delays Return
On Thursday, the Port of Dover reported fresh delays due to heavy traffic. Ferry operator DFDS confirmed morning queues of around 90 minutes as the long weekend kicked off. The port experienced even worse last week, with delays creeping over 14 hours.
Traffic eventually eased by afternoon with vehicles flowing smoothly through border controls and check-in. Still, the port warned of possible wait times stretching to a few hours during Friday’s peak travel hours.
Authorities urged travellers to avoid arriving too early or without a booking, and to keep up to date via their ferry operators. The ongoing delays have been blamed on slow post-Brexit border checks and unexpectedly heavy coach traffic.
Travel to Europe Faces More Mayhem Amid Strikes
French pension reform strikes have crippled travel too. Many flights to, from, and across France have been grounded after air traffic controllers walked out. Airlines have cancelled numerous flights, leaving holidaymakers stranded.
Meanwhile, UK rail operator cancelled two trains on Thursday due to staff shortages but assured passengers Friday services will run as normal.
Protesters in Paris caused chaos by blocking a key road near Charles de Gaulle Airport, forcing passengers to make a trek on foot to the terminals.
Good News on the Weather Front
Thankfully, the forecast stays dry until Monday, so weather isn’t expected to worsen travel chaos this weekend.
