74,000 Deer Crashes Hit UK Roads Every Year!
Watch out, drivers! Every year, the UK sees a staggering 74,000 deer-related road crashes. The danger ramps up in October and November, the deer mating season, when these creatures are on the move and can dart out unexpectedly.
#DeerAware: East Sussex Council Sounds the Alarm
East Sussex County Council is firing up a social media campaign with the hashtag #deeraware, teaming up with The Deer Initiative to keep you safe this autumn on rural roads. Deer are creatures of habit, so look out for warning signs marking their usual crossing spots.
Top Tips to Dodge Deer Drama on the Road
- Slow down and stay sharp when you spot deer signs or drive through woods.
- Be extra cautious at dawn, dusk, and night when deer are most active.
- Use full-beam headlights if the road’s clear—they’ll catch the gleam of deer eyes—but dip beams quickly if you spot one to avoid spooking it.
- Remember, deer rarely travel solo. Spot one? Prepare for a whole family crossing.
What To Do If You Hit a Deer
If the worst happens, stay calm. Park safely, switch on hazard lights, and call the police on 101. In emergencies or if the deer blocks the road, ring 999. Don’t try to soothe injured deer—they might panic and dash back into traffic.
“We’re lucky in East Sussex to live in a largely rural county which provides an ideal habitat for deer,” said Cllr Claire Dowling, transport and environment lead. “Be alert, especially between sunset and sunrise. A collision can be serious, for drivers and deer alike. Follow simple safety tips to protect lives and help these magnificent animals thrive.”
Deer activity also spikes in spring around May and June during calving, so keep your eyes peeled year-round.
