National Highways Chair Dipesh Shah OBE to Step Down by End of 2023
Dipesh Shah OBE, Chair of government-owned National Highways, has revealed he will leave his post by the end of 2023. Shah has led the company for three years, overseeing England’s vital 4,500-mile strategic road network.
Short Extension While Search for Replacement Gets Underway
Appointed in September 2020, Shah was tasked with delivering the government’s second road investment strategy and driving key initiatives. With his fixed three-year term set to end in August, he has agreed a brief extension until the end of the year as the Department for Transport (DfT) begins the hunt for a successor.
Shah Reflects on His Tenure
“I have been privileged and honoured to serve as Chair at National Highways, which plays such a pivotal role in connecting communities across England,” Shah said. “We have achieved much during my tenure, and I am grateful to everyone involved for their support. I will continue to work with colleagues to deliver our goals during the remainder of my time as Chair.”
Government Praises Shah’s Collaborative Leadership
Transport Secretary Mark Harper thanked Shah for his “work as Chair of National Highways over the past 3 years,” adding, “Ministers and officials in the Department for Transport have enjoyed working with Dipesh and appreciated his collaborative approach. I wish him the best of luck in his next steps.”
Major Milestones and Future Goals for National Highways
Since 2020, National Highways has supported up to 64,000 construction jobs and pumped £27 billion into the economy through a £10.5 billion network improvement scheme. Ten major projects are complete, 23 are under construction, and 25 more are in development, all boosting safety and journey reliability.
The company also aims to slash carbon emissions to net zero and reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2025.
National Highways CEO Nick Harris said: “I would like to thank Dipesh for his dedication and support during his time as Chair. His contribution has been invaluable in shaping and driving our priorities.”
What’s Next for Dipesh Shah?
With a stellar career in both public and private sectors, Shah will continue his other Chair roles beyond National Highways and take on new responsibilities.
