New Biometric Checks Shake Up Border Control
Europe is rolling out a biometric verification system to speed up border processing. Travellers will now undergo streamlined biometric checks at entry points, making crossing quicker than ever.
What Border Officers Will Ask For
- Proof of accommodation
- Return travel tickets
- Proof of sufficient funds
This applies to the EU’s Schengen Area, including Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.
French Border Controls in the UK
Several UK locations will introduce French border controls as part of the new system. This is a key step towards full biometric implementation.
Who’s Affected?
Rules cover travellers using short-stay permits or long-stay visas. Nationals from Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and the Vatican are included.
Don’t Confuse EES with ETIAS
Important: The Entry/Exit System (EES) is not the same as ETIAS. ETIAS is a new travel authorisation set to launch in late 2026, requiring pre-travel approval for non-EU citizens.
The EU promises faster checks long term, but warns travellers to expect longer queues during the rollout phase.
