Rushed Asylum Centre Struggles to Get Ready on Time
A source inside the new asylum centre reveals officials are under serious pressure to open the facility. Staff have been on standby for weeks, but contractors just can’t move fast enough to finish the work.
Home Office Plans Unveiled Back in 2021
The Home Office confirmed in December 2021 it would convert the former Defence Fire Training and Development Centre to process asylum seekers. The site will hold arrivals for up to five days while security and identity checks are carried out.
The centre’s closure was announced last year after a £525 million, 12-year contract was signed to outsource the Ministry of Defence’s fire and rescue services to Capita Business Services.
Converted Barracks with High-Tech Touches
- Asylum seekers will enter through a single main entrance.
- They’ll be driven to the old fire engine bays before being allocated rooms in the barracks.
- White tents have been erected outside the buildings.
- Painting is underway to freshen up walls.
- All barrack rooms now have massive 70-inch TVs installed.
- A central kitchen will provide meals for residents.
MP Demands Answers as Centre Faces Delays
North Thanet MP Sir Roger Gale has called for “urgent clarification” from both the Home Office and MOD about the ongoing delays and operational plans.
The Ministry of Defence has been contacted but has yet to comment.
