New Zebra Crossing and Footpath Upgrades Set for Isle of Wight’s Seaview and Gunville

The Isle of Wight Council and Island Roads are launching vital footpath improvements in Seaview and Gunville starting 29 February. These works promise safer streets and smoother journeys for residents.

Seaview Footpath Overhaul: Traffic Chaos Ahead

The upgrade on Bullen Road, between Pondwell Close and Gregory Avenue, will last around four weeks. For safety, temporary traffic signals and barriers will be in place for three weeks. A full road closure is planned for a few days to allow tree felling, with a signed diversion through Marlborough Road, Appley Road, and Calthorpe Road.

The project includes building a new footpath linking Pondwell Close to Gregory Avenue and adding traffic calming measures. To make way, the corner tree at Pondwell Close and the hedge at Gregory Avenue’s start will be removed.

Gunville Gets a Safer Zebra Crossing – Ahead of Schedule

Work to replace the old uncontrolled crossing on Gunville Road, Carisbrooke, has been brought forward and will run until the week ending 20 March. A wider, clearer zebra crossing will be installed.

Temporary two-way traffic signals will control traffic. Workers will patch one side at a time, flipping traffic management to complete both sides safely.

Council and Island Roads Promise Safer Streets for All

“As part of our Local Transport Plan commitments, we’re excited to deliver safer traffic calming and improved footways,” said Councillor Phil Jordan, Executive Member for Public Protection and PFI. “These projects are key to enhancing the Island’s transport network.”

Island Roads’ Network Manager Kevin Burton added, “We apologise for any disruption, but once finished, pedestrians and drivers alike will benefit from the upgraded safety measures.”

Residents are urged to stay alert and follow new traffic signs while these important upgrades take place.
