Newhaven Town Centre Set for Massive Makeover as Dacre Road Car Park Works Kick Off
Big changes are rolling into Newhaven next week as the Dacre Road Car Park refurbishment starts on Monday, 27 February. The £multi-million overhaul aims to breathe new life into the town centre with safety and style at the heart of the project.
Car Park Gets Major Safety and Style Upgrade
The council warns some parking spaces will be temporarily out of action for safety reasons, but public access will be maintained throughout. Clear signage and extensive communication with locals will keep disruption to a minimum.
Plans include structural repairs, resurfacing, drainage improvements, new lighting, and a brand-new lift. Security upgrades and EV charging stations are also on the cards, along with green living walls to add a splash of nature.
Multi-Purpose Events Space Coming to Upper Decks
Once the refurbishment wraps up, the upper levels will transform into a versatile events hub. This will boost community engagement and support regeneration across Newhaven’s centre.
Local Leaders Back the Revamp
“Many people around town have told me they don’t feel safe using the multi-storey car park in Dacre Road, so I’m pleased to welcome these improvements,” said James MacCleary, Lewes District Council leader and Newhaven councillor. “The car park slipped into disrepair, but upgrading it will improve safety and help regeneration in our town centre. It’s another step in the right direction for Newhaven.”
More Town Centre Boosts: Health and Wellbeing Hub Plans
Meanwhile, Lewes District Council is also set to redevelop the old Co-op and former Peacocks units into a new health and wellbeing hub. This centre will house GP surgeries, Primary Care Network facilities, and services run by Wave Leisure, offering a major upgrade to local healthcare and leisure amenities.
