Blazes Blaze Through London: Four Major Fires Tear Up Grassland

Firefighters battled several fierce fires across London this weekend. The hotspots? Enfield, Hayes, Thamesmead, and Manor Park saw flames rip through grass, shrubland, and peat, sparking major emergency responses.

Enfield Blaze Wrecks 300m x 50m of Land

At 2.53pm on Saturday, crews raced to Bell Lane in Enfield where a grass and shrub fire tore through a huge patch measuring 300 metres by 50 metres. Around 25 firefighters from Finchley, Southgate, Leytonstone, and even Essex Fire and Rescue spent over 13 hours dousing the flames, finally putting out the fire by 4.03am Sunday.

Hayes and Manor Park Hit Hard

  • Hayes: A fire behind a cricket club on The Green destroyed a massive hectare of grass and shrubland. Four engines and about 25 firefighters tackled the blaze from 5.21pm to 7.10pm.
  • Manor Park: Later, a bigger beast broke out on Capel Road, razing three hectares of land including grass, shrubland, and peat. Six fire engines and 40 firefighters fought the blaze from 7.12pm to 9.18pm.

Sunday Grass Fire in Hornchurch

The drama continued on Sunday with a grass fire on Gladiator Way, Hornchurch, destroying 50 square metres of vegetation. Four fire engines and 25 firefighters doused the flames between 7.24pm and 8.55pm. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported across all incidents.

Firefighters Warn: Stay Alert This Summer!

There are still high temperatures forecast, and the ground remains dry,” a London Fire Brigade spokesperson warned. “We’re urging people to be extra cautious this summer to help us prevent fires on open land.”

“Make sure all garbage, especially glass, is properly disposed of, and always put out cigarettes fully. Please avoid barbecues in parks and public spaces after hot weather.”

The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers handled a whopping 79 fire calls over the weekend, highlighting the scale of the crisis amid soaring temperatures. Stay safe and stay vigilant!
