Revolutionising Travel: New Transport Data Strategy Launched
The government has unveiled a bold plan to transform how we access and use transport data. The aim? To spark innovation, improve journey planning, and deliver better services for all passengers.
Smarter Travel at Your Fingertips
- Passengers will enjoy smoother, more streamlined journey planning apps and timetables.
- More accurate and accessible transport data will make trip planning faster and simpler.
- The strategy paves the way for creative new solutions across the transport sector.
Five Key Ambitions Driving Change
The Transport Data Strategy focuses on five core goals:
- Boosting data sharing for the benefit of transport users.
- Setting clear data standards across the industry.
- Enhancing data skills within the transport workforce.
- Establishing strong governance and open communication with the sector.
- Providing leadership and support to drive sector-wide improvements.
Innovative Pilot and Proven Initiatives
The government is launching the ‘Find Transport Data’ pilot, a data catalogue that helps innovators and researchers easily access transport data. This will aid in delivering smarter, more efficient travel services.
This strategy builds on progress from existing initiatives like:
- Bus Open Data Service (BODS)
- Street Manager
- Development of the 1 Data Marketplace
- Modernisation of National Public Transport Access Nodes (NaPTAN)
Data ethics are also front and centre, ensuring transport data is used responsibly.
Industry Backing the Plan
“TfWM welcomes the Transport Data Strategy’s goal of greater quality and use of transport data. We want Journeys for Everyone to be so seamless and convenient that people choose alternatives to driving because they’re simply better,” said Chris Lane, Head of Transport Innovation at Transport for West Midlands.
This new strategy promises to revolutionise travel by putting powerful, accurate data right at passengers’ fingertips — making journeys easier and more enjoyable for all.
