Massive Blaze Triggers Evacuations on Stroud Lane

Fifteen people were rushed from seven homes near Stroud Lane after a fierce fire erupted around Yateley Common. Thick, choking smoke urged residents to seal windows and doors as flames threatened the peaceful area.

60 Firefighters Battle Ferocious Flames

Just after 11:30am on July 14, flood of 999 calls sent emergency crews scrambling. At peak chaos, over 60 firefighters were on the ground battling the inferno. Hampshire’s best were joined by reinforcements from Royal Berkshire and Surrey Fire and Rescue Services to tackle the blaze.

Ryan Thurman, Incident Command Group Manager, said: “Our crews arrived in extremely difficult conditions. The flames were towering, and the fire spread fast. The radiated heat even caused the fire to jump over a path, devastating a large part of the common.”

“There was real danger to homes and wildlife. Our firefighters worked tirelessly to contain and control it.”

Heat and Dry Weather Fuel Fire Fury

Firefighters endured scorching conditions, using Land Rovers to access tough terrain. The fire scorched roughly 35 hectares before being surrounded by 3pm. By 5pm, the situation improved enough for evacuees to return home, though crews remain on site to damp down hotspots.

Thurman added: “The dry, hot weather and zero rain have made it easy for fires to take hold and spread quickly. We still don’t know what sparked this one—and we may never find out. But barbecues, bonfires, discarded cigarettes, and glass bottles are known culprits.”

Extreme Heat and Wildfire Alerts Continue

An extreme heat alert is active through the weekend and into next week, alongside an amber wildfire warning. Officials urge everyone to be extra vigilant. Thurman warns: “If you spot a fire, call 999 immediately and keep clear.”

Fire crews from Alton, Bordon, Liphook, Fleet, Hartley Wintney, Eastleigh, Andover, Rushmoor, Basingstoke, Fareham, and several other areas joined the fight to save homes and countryside.
