Serious Crash Shuts Newgate Lane, Fareham
Newgate Lane in Fareham, Hampshire, was shut down this morning after a nasty three-vehicle smash near Longfield Avenue. Emergency services rushed to the scene just after 9am following a major collision involving a Mercedes Sprinter van, a Vauxhall Zafira people carrier, and a large wood-carrying goods vehicle.
Rescue Teams Fight to Free Trapped Driver
Two fire crews from Hampshire Fire and Rescue in Fareham were called in to cut the roof off the Vauxhall Zafira to free the trapped driver. The injured motorist was placed on a spinal board and rushed to hospital by ambulance with serious injuries.
Eyewitness Describes Shocking Moments
“The Mercedes Sprinter came over the hill on the wrong side of the road and hit the silver people carrier. It all happened in slow motion. The van then smashed into a flatbed lorry,” said a woman sitting at a nearby bus stop. “The driver looked like he was having some kind of medical episode.”
Police Investigation Underway, Road Reopened
Officers from Hampshire Road Policing and collision investigators quickly closed Newgate Lane. The road remained shut for several hours as police conducted their investigation into the crash. The lane was reopened to traffic at 11:57am.
