The Ark Furniture Store, a staple of Albert Road for 20 years, is shutting up shop. The popular charity outlet, known for selling quality second-hand furniture and household goods, has helped fund the vital work of The Stubbington Ark. But rising rents in this bustling Southsea hotspot have hit small independent and charity shops hard.
Independent Businesses Pushed Out by Big Chains
Albert Road, once famously dubbed “the Independent Republic,” is losing its unique charm. Recently, big names like Subway US 1 and Costa Coffee have moved in, forcing smaller traders and charities to pack up.
The Ark Furniture Store Bids Farewell
Iain Styles from The Ark told Spotted portsmouth/" title="Portsmouth" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Portsmouth: “The Ark Furniture Store is unfortunately having to close its doors permanently. All of us here would like to thank all of our customers past and present for your support over the years. But due to rising costs, we can no longer carry on in our current location.”
He added: “We hope to see you over the next few months. There are still plenty of bargains to be had, and of course, we will still be accepting donations, large or small. Once again, thanks for all your support.”
