RAF 100 Baton Relay Touches Down on the Isle of Wight
The RAF 100 Baton Relay is making waves on the Isle of Wight – and it’s no ordinary run. The relay began as an orienteering challenge, and that adventurous spirit is still very much alive. Each baton carrier is handed only start and end points. From there, it’s down to them to chart their own route.
A Team Effort Across the RAF
The baton isn’t just passed hand to hand. It’s carried by a mix of RAF personnel, cadets, veterans, and members of the RAF’s many sporting associations. Expect a wild ride – from rowing crews to parachuting daredevils. The RAF Rowing Club will ferry the baton along the River Thames. Meanwhile, the RAF Falcons will parachute it down from the skies.
Unique Travel Methods Keep the Relay Exciting
- The baton will be ridden on horseback.
- Power kited along the windswept island of Benbecula.
- Even taken on a hovercraft trip to visit schools on the Isle of Wight, bringing the RAF spirit to local kids.
The relay kicked off at the Royal Courts of Justice on 1 April 2018 and will wrap up 100 days later on 10 July at Horseguards Parade.
“It’s an incredible way to celebrate the RAF’s 100th anniversary, combining sport, adventure, and community spirit,” said a relay organiser.
