Elderly Woman Targeted by Bogus Driveway Cleaners Demanding £300
An 81-year-old woman was pressured by three men who jet washed her driveway without permission before demanding £300 for the work. The incident happened on Saturday 11 March 2023 near Station Road, Edenbridge.
The trio fled when a relative confronted them. No payment was made. The suspects drove a white Ford Transit van with an Irish number plate.
More Door-to-Door Scams Hit Sevenoaks
Just two days later, on Monday 13 March, Kent Police received reports of suspicious activity in Broomfield Road, Sevenoaks. At least two men were seen persistently knocking on doors, offering to clean driveways. This time, they were in a silver Toyota Hilux.
Police believe the incidents are linked and warn residents to be on high alert.

“Some criminals will look to exploit the more vulnerable members of our communities by charging exorbitant amounts of money for work that is often completely unnecessary or substandard,” said Inspector Matt Atkinson of the Sevenoaks Local Policing Team.
“We urge residents not to deal with cold callers offering driveway cleaning, roof repairs, or garden maintenance. Neighbours should keep an eye out for the elderly and vulnerable. If you see anything suspicious, call the police immediately.”

- Always refuse unsolicited doorstep offers for repairs or maintenance.
- Don’t let anyone pressure you into agreeing to work. If someone refuses to leave, call 999.
- Never go to the bank or cash point with a trader—legitimate ones won’t ask you to.
- Use reputable tradespeople registered with the Kent County Council Trading Standards scheme.
- Get quotes in writing and verify the identity of the tradesperson and their company.
