Rishi Sunak jets off for emergency Middle East talks amid Hamas conflict

Sunak to meet Israeli leaders in urgent peace mission

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is heading to the Middle East on a critical two-day tour. His first stop: Israel, where he’ll meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog on Thursday morning. The mission? To cool tensions and seek a way out of the escalating Hamas conflict.

After Israel, Sunak plans to visit several regional capitals to push diplomatic talks aimed at preventing further bloodshed.

Humanitarian aid set to roll into Gaza

In a rare glimmer of hope, US President Joe Biden revealed that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has agreed to open the Rafah border crossing. Around 20 trucks loaded with urgent humanitarian aid are set to enter Gaza, where supplies have all but run dry.

Biden praised Sisi for the move, stressing the critical need to help civilians trapped in the conflict zone. White House officials say the aid convoy could begin rolling as early as Friday, once essential road repairs are complete.

Israel has also promised not to block the flow of water, food, and medicine into Gaza from Egypt, responding to Biden’s urgent calls. The US and Egypt remain united in tackling the dire humanitarian crisis while working to keep the Middle East stable.

Biden to address global crises amid rising tensions

This Thursday, Biden will deliver a key speech covering the Israel-Hamas war and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, underlining the importance of US commitment to peace.

But tensions remain high. Hezbollah, the militant group based in Lebanon, has warned it is “thousands of times stronger” than before as it clashes with Israeli forces along the border. The US has sternly warned Iran — a backer of both Hezbollah and Hamas — against getting sucked deeper into the crisis.

To deter any further escalation, Washington has deployed two aircraft carriers to the region.

Hezbollah fires fresh threats amid border clashes

In a rallying speech, Hezbollah official Hashem Safieddine warned Joe Biden, Netanyahu, and “malicious Europeans” to tread carefully. He vowed any mistakes against Hezbollah’s resistance would trigger a fierce response.

Since Hamas launched its October attack on Israel, Hezbollah and Israeli forces have exchanged frequent fire. The group has claimed attacks on Israeli barracks and military positions near the Lebanese border, raising fears of a wider conflict.
