Water main bursts on Isle of Wight, floods Quarr Hill and cuts water to 4,000 homes
A major water main burst this morning on the A3054 Quarr Hill in Binstead, Isle of Wight, flooding the road and wreaking havoc on the local water supply.
Flood chaos near Quarr Abbey
The ruptured nine-inch pipe, right by the entrance to Quarr Abbey, has turned one side of the main road into a rushing river of water. Hundreds of litres are pouring down the hill, causing damage to the road and forcing traffic lights to be installed. Delays are already mounting for drivers in the area.
Thousands face water pressure loss
Some 4,000 homes in Binstead and Ryde are suffering from low water pressure or no water at all. Four properties have been completely cut off while repair crews work. Locals have reported poor water supply as engineers tackle the issue.
Repair works underway, fix expected by evening
Southern Water has sent in specialist contractors and machinery to dig down to the burst pipe. An engineer is on site inspecting the damage and organising repairs. To ease the impact, the water flow direction has been altered for Ryde residents.
A Southern Water spokesperson said: “We are working hard to complete repairs today and restore normal service as soon as possible.” Residents are advised to expect some disruption until the fix is complete.
